“Re-Birthday Song ~ Koi Wa Utau Shinigami ~” Review – Otome Games With Feels Train

What is it about?

That song is an offering from the Reapers— a Requiem— very near the boundary between heaven and hell where one’s soul returns to. In that place is a school in which Reapers—beings that collect human souls— are developed and trained. Assembled as “Reaper Cadets” at this school is the heroine and her friends who were once human. There, all possessing the same aspiration of becoming a Reaper, cadets pair up with one another to study in order to become a fully fledged Reaper, but…

The heroine, Kokoro, wasn’t selected by anybody to be her partner as she performed poorly in all disciplines of Reaper study. As a result, she was grouped with other cadets that were falling behind, and was made to take special supplementary lessons. The other attendees of these supplementary lessons are fellow Reaper cadets. It’s filled with unique guys, all with their own reasons for attending the school.

Kokoro must choose one of the boys to become partners with, however… With her partner at her side, will she be able to become a full fledged Reaper?

Or… Will a single tale of love between two underachieving Reaper cadets be woven instead?

What is the genre of the story?

Feels. Feels. Feels.

Kidding. If I were to label it, it’d be supernatural, fantasy, romance, drama, tragedy and mystery.

What is there to love about?

  • First, Visuals. The artist for this otome game is freakin’ Satoi. He is also the artist for other popular games like Diabolik Lovers and Ozmafia! The pastel theme used throughout the game is such a treat to the eyes that I could actually stare at it for a whole day.
  • Second, plot. The story is quite entertaining especially on your first playthrough. Plus, it’s a school for Grim Reapers. Things are bound to get interesting. The romance part is fairly cute, albeit some are a bit cliche and predictable. In the end, the crown goes to tragedy part of the story. It was beautiful. It was heartbreaking.

How heartbreaking is it?

If you’ve watched lots of anime, kdramas and movies, you’d know that when “Grim Reapers”, “Pasts”, “Amnesia” are all present, things are sure to get heartbreakingly messy.

There are five routes all in all. 3 out 5 are quite tame. You’d get teary at some point, or maybe even cry if you are especially sensitive. The other one is sure to make you cry at least once.

One of the routes is especially bad, though. If you’ve read reviews about this game from other authors, I’m betting that most of them said they keep crying their eyes out. That’s what I did, too. I was crying and sobbing and I had to make sure that everybody is asleep before I play (I wouldn’t want anybody walking in on me crying in front of the laptop).

Who are the voice actors?

  • Fukuyama Jun as Kairi – Other notable roles are Yukio Okumura from Ao no exorcist, King from The Seven Deadly Sins, Koro-sensei from Assassination Classroom and Grell from Kuroshitsuji.
  • Matsuoka Yoshitsugu as Ame – Other notable roles are Bell Cranel from DanMachi, Amaki Ren from The Rising of the Shield Hero, Kirito from Sword Art Online, and Soma from Shokugeki No Soma
  • Kondou Takayuki as Syun – Other notable roles are Poppo from Anohana and Eita Tanaka from Shakugan No Shana.
  • Maeno Tomoaki as Yoru – Other notable roles are Veldora from That Time I got Reincarnated As a Slime, Decim from Death Parade and Naotsugu from Log Horizon.
  • Suwabe Junichi as Nami – Other Notable roles are Aizawa from Boku No Hero Academia, Abraham Van Hellsing from Code:Realize, Victor from Yuri on Ice, and Akira Hayama from Shokugeki No Soma.

Spoilers, please?

NOOOOOOOOOO! I don’t like giving spoilers. But if I have to, I guess I’d just say that all five guys actually know the female main character (Cocoro) back when they were alive.

Oh, and another “slight” spoiler – the very heartbreaking route I was talking about earlier was Kairi’s. If you want to play the game, I’d suggest you start with him first.

Any rants?

I actually already made a review on this game from my previous blog. Here are the links:

Qiara’s Note: Overall, the game is quite nice. If you’re here for the feels, play Kairi’s route.
